Mary Jane Greear Humphrey

Mary Jane Greear Humphrey died on May 17, 2017. She was born July 22, 1941 to David and Ethelmae Hancock Greear in Glenwood Springs, CO. She grew up in Colorado and Utah, graduating from Utah State University in 1964. She later earned a Master of Community and Regional Planning degree and an MA from the University of Nebraska. She married the love of her life, Donald Humphrey, in 1961. Very active in church and civic affairs, Mary Jane served as junior and senior warden of St. Mark’s on the Campus Episcopal Church; carried portfolios in both the local and state League of Women Voters; served on the local and state ARC boards; served two terms on the one-book-one-Lincoln selection committee; fulfilled one term on Lincoln’s Board of Zoning Appeals; was appointed to the first Lincoln-Lancaster Commission on the Status of Women; and served as a Lincoln Literacy board member and officer. Her professional career involved a ten year tenure as a director at Region V services, then she segued into a late-life, inevitable career as a writing teacher, both at UNL and Southeast Community College.

She is survived by her husband, Don, and two sons, David of Auburn, NE and Patrick (Carla) of Lincoln; two grandchildren, Collin and Kayla Humphrey and sister, Nedra Werking (Donald) of Aurora, CO.

She is preceded in death by her parents, David and Ethelmae Greear and sister, Judy Wright.
